Connection is the focus of Orientation, a three-day event for new students at Olivet Nazarene University. Connecting with Olivet faculty, staff and Dr. John C. Bowling, University president. Finding a roommate. Meeting future classmates. Making technical connections with my.olivet.edu. Formalizing financial connections with the Tiger Card.

Parents learn more about Olivet’s values and mission. Learn meaningful ways to help their students make the transition from home life to college life. Learn how to face the financial realities with confidence.

We won’t ignore the obvious here. Orientation includes nervousness, anticipation, anxiety and a little awkwardness. But the benefits far outweigh the discomfort for incoming students — and their parents. The goal is to take care of all the necessary details before the first day of college arrives.

Time on campus together — from the worship kick-off service on Thursday evening to the closing breakfast on Saturday morning — reduces stress and casts the vision for quality higher education. At the Friday evening dinner, the reality that the incoming freshmen are part of something bigger than themselves begins to take root. Dr. Bowling tells the Olivet story in an articulate way, encouraging students with the truth that they are at Olivet because of an amazing series of events that began in 1907.

Students remember their Orientation experience. Just ask sophomore Westin Edwards. “Orientation showcases the environment of joy and excellence that Olivet provides on campus,” he says. “Being part of this event sets the perspective of the students and parents who attend.”

“During that Orientation weekend, you start believing that there is a reason why you are at Olivet,” Westin adds. “You feel called to live out that reason and figure out what God has in store for you during this time in your life.”
