For high school teacher and coach Jared Macari, the road to a more secure and versatile teaching career began with a summer decision in 2008—to pursue the Driver Education Endorsement (Online) Illinois Licensure through Olivet Nazarene University.
“At the time, it was just about making myself more employable,” Macari said. “I didn’t realize then how much it would shape my future in education.”
Macari, who now teaches full-time driver’s education at Herscher High School in Herscher, Illinois, says the endorsement has opened doors that many educators don’t even realize exist.
“Driver’s Ed is one of those subjects where schools are constantly looking for certified teachers,” he said. “Especially in rural areas like ours, it’s essential—and there just aren’t enough people qualified to teach it.”
For teachers curious about how to become a driver’s ed teacher in Illinois, the Illinois State Board of Education requires a specific endorsement. Through Olivet’s fully online program, educators can complete the required coursework while continuing to teach.
“This Illinois online program is the best option out there,” Macari said. “The structure of the Driver’s Ed endorsement made it doable during the summer. You get the right combination of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel preparation.”
Built for Teachers. Designed for Impact.
Macari has worked with more than 300 students behind the wheel since earning his Driver’s Ed teacher certification in Illinois. In districts like Herscher, where most students rely on a license for jobs or extracurriculars, the impact is clear.
“Getting a driver’s license can be life-changing for our students,” he said. “It means access to work, opportunities and the freedom to participate more fully in life.”
Some prospective teachers may hesitate to take on this responsibility—but Macari says Olivet’s program prepares instructors to handle every scenario.
“We learn safety protocols, communication techniques, how to use the dual-brake system—everything,” he said. “You feel confident and capable from day one.”
A Career That Pays Off
Today’s education landscape is changing. Schools across the state are actively recruiting teachers who hold a Driver’s Ed endorsement in Illinois, offering stipends and flexible scheduling to meet high demand.
Becoming a Driver’s Ed teacher in Illinois can increase your salary as well as providing long-term stability and growth.
“Having this endorsement has made me one of the most valuable people in the building,” he said. “There’s always a need for Driver’s Ed, and because of Olivet, I’m ready to meet it.”
Now mentoring new teachers in the program, Macari shares materials, classroom tools, and continued support.
“When you come through Olivet,” he said, “you’re part of a professional family. That connection doesn’t end after you finish the coursework—it’s for life.”
