For ONU students and alumni, being savvy on social media can now be a requirement across fields as diverse as business, interior design and education. As 2024 grads prepare to enter the job market, professional-level social media skills may be required to land interviews for competitive positions.

Recently, James Webb of Dyce Media joined Spencer James ’24 and ONU Grad Assistant Karli Byrd ’23 on the Createur Podcast to share insights on what’s next in social media, to help students and alumni alike.

For Small Business & Entrepreneurs: Platform is Key
With more social networks entering the market each year, the decision on where to put limited time and resources can feel overwhelming. Webb suggests trying them all before narrowing your focus to fit your style and objectives.

Short and snappy videos reach large audiences across TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, while text-based content amplifies your message best on Twitter and Threads.

For Students: Entrepreneurship Requires Diverse Skills
For young entrepreneurs and students who plan to start a business upon graduation, Webb highlights the advantage of smaller companies, which have the option to outmaneuver larger competition due to bureaucratic hurdles that all major corporations encounter.

Webb recommends being a generalist and focusing on acquiring a wide skillset to succeed in today’s market.
