ILCMEA (Illinois Collegiate Music Education Association), our professional music education organization at Olivet Nazarene University, strives to give our music education majors professional development and guidance. Each student instructor that is part of this program has been under School of Music faculty mentorship and guidance and will continue to hone their instruction skills through the experiences teaching as a part of this program. This program is open to the community and it is designed for 5-12 grade students.

The ILCMEA student instructors are trained and mentored by accredited music faculty members from Olivet Nazarene University with years of private instruction experience. These mentors will be available to them throughout the time they are giving private lessons.

Before acceptance into the program, each student instructor candidate fills out an application form and goes through an interview process to filter only the best-fit candidates to represent the program and the University.

As part of their training, the student instructor will develop a “studio policy” outlining attendance, payment and communication expectations. They will provide you with a copy of their studio policy on the first day of lessons and will answer any of your questions. As advertised, this program is “free to start,” meaning families will not be charged for the first two half-hour lessons they receive from a student instructor. The instructor can receive volunteer hours for this instruction and may ask you to sign off on a volunteer hours log sheet with a lesson description.

Any comments or concerns regarding the student instructor’s professionalism, conduct, or communication should be sent promptly to the Private Lesson Program Chair. These will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

If you have any further questions about the program, please contact Isabella McCleskey, student chair of the Private Lesson Program, at imccleskey@olivet.edu.

Unfortunately, the School of Music is unable to offer any instrument rentals through the ILCMEA Private Lesson Program. Your student needs to have access to an instrument to bring to their lessons and to practice with at home. If you are in need of an instrument, try contacting your student’s music teacher for some available options.

Lessons will be conducted in the Larsen Fine Arts Center, located on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University.
