BOURBONNAIS, IL. — Olivet Nazarene (IL) (16-2-1, 10-0-0) defeated St. Ambrose (IA) (10-9-0, 3-7-0) 2-0 on Wednesday, with the Tigers securing a shutout at home.
The match commenced with Olivet Nazarene (IL) taking the initiative early on. Atjon Thaqi capitalized on a penalty kick at 12:40, putting Olivet Nazarene ahead 1-0. Despite repeated offensive efforts, including a shot that hit the crossbar from Nathan Schmidli at 30:11, the home team was unable to extend their lead. St. Ambrose (IA) managed a few attempts, but Cedric Kunzli‘s goalkeeping ensured the visitors remained scoreless. The half concluded with Olivet Nazarene holding a 1-0 advantage.
Olivet Nazarene maintained pressure throughout the second half, culminating in a decisive goal at the 89th minute by Noa Norton, assisted by Ali Sillah. Despite several attempts earlier in the half, including shots from Norton and Thaqi, the breakthrough came late. St. Ambrose received multiple yellow cards, which disrupted their momentum and facilitated the Tigers’ persistent attacks. The half concluded with Olivet Nazarene securing a 2-0 victory.
Norton scored one goal and led the Tigers with six shots, three of which were on target. Thaqi contributed a crucial goal, which was the game-winner, among four shots attempted. Sillah provided an assist, helping to set up a scoring opportunity. Kunzli recorded three saves and maintained a shutout for the team.
The Tigers improved to 16-2-1 overall and 10-0-0 in conference play. The Bees fell to 10-9-0 overall and 3-7-0 in conference matches.
