Presence St. Mary’s Hospital (PSMH) of Kankakee, Illinois, recently honored the student volunteers of Olivet Nazarene University with its Inspire Award. This is an annual recognition awarded to groups, individuals or community organizations that exemplify the values of Presence Health: Honesty, Oneness, People and Excellence. The award also celebrates inspirational leadership that advances the health and well-being of the community.

“Each of us has something to offer in building the kingdom of God,” said Chris Shride ’93, PSMH president, in presenting the award during a special gathering at Olivet. “The best places to do this are in our own homes, in our own relationships and in our own communities. Volunteering the way you do not only serves the Lord, but truly and deeply blesses the lives of those who prosper and grow as a result of your selflessness.”

With more than 20 unique volunteer groups and more than 1,400 student volunteers, Olivet students volunteer their time to multiple initiatives.

“We are fortunate to have such a quality health care partner as Presence St. Mary’s Hospital,” said Dr. Woody Webb, vice president for student development at Olivet. “It means so much when a community organization recognizes the efforts and commitment of our students.” Dr. Webb and Kaleb Miller, a senior and student body president, accepted the award on behalf of the students. In the audience were students, faculty and staff representing many of Olivet’s volunteer groups.

The recipient of the annual award is chosen by PSMH’s Community Board. The Honorable Mary K. O’Brien, judge of the 3rd District Appellate Court and chair of the Presence Health Kankakee River Valley Community Leadership Board, said in addressing students during the presentation: “You answered the calling to be part of something larger than yourself. This award appropriately reflects your enduring commitment to our community and those we serve.”
