Olivet Tiger Nic Reed claims national honor

Nic Reed is one of only two in Tiger men’s basketball program history to be named National Player of the Week twice.

For the first time this season and second time in his career, Nic Reed of Olivet Nazarene University was named NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Player of the Week by the national office, announced on January 23, 2018. Nic is a sophomore majoring in business administration/finance.

He was selected for his play during the week of Jan. 15–20 and was chosen out of the conference and Association of Independent Institutions award winners. 

The 6-foot, 5-inch forward broke a 42-year-old ONU single-game record with a career-high 51 points in a win over Indiana University South Bend last week (Jan. 17). He added eight rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes, including shooting 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from the field, 5-of-8 from the three-point line and 6-for-7 from the foul line. 

Three days later, he posted his fifth 30-point game of the season, scoring a team-high 33 points against Saint Xavier (Ill.) (Jan. 20). He went 10-of-16 from the field and an impressive 12-of-13 from the charity stripe. He collected a game-high eight rebounds, added three assists and three steals in 34 minutes. 

He ranks fourth nationally among NAIA Division II leaders in total scoring (506), sixth in points per game (24.1), is 21st in defensive rebounds per game (6.1), 31st in total rebounds (172) and rebounds per game (8.2).
