In the summer 2021 issue of Olivet The Magazine, “Believe.,” the editorial team highlighted one of the core tenants of Christian higher education.

As the Editorial Board wrote at the beginning of the magazine: “Believe in the greatness and goodness of our God. Believe that He has a grand purpose and a plan for each of us. Believe that God can do an incredible work in and through us. Believe that God is using the people of Olivet as a significant force for good in the world.”

University president, Dr. Gregg Chenoweth ’90, wrote his first “Letter from the President” in which he shares his excitement for the future of Olivet. Later in the issue, Dr. Chenoweth’s previous leadership experiences and personal interests are unpacked in an introductory article and exclusive interview with the president.

“The longer I live, the clearer I am that God is sovereign in ways that only hindsight can show,” said Dr. Chenoweth. “I’m on assignment from Him, and I want to number my days right. Miracles are happening somewhere today. I want to hijack my own sense of the mundane and participate in His remarkable things happening every day.”

Young alumni in eight different fields of study shared about the “Higher Purpose” they have found in graduate school because of the foundation they established during their undergraduate experiences at Olivet. Recent graduate, Elizabeth Kijowski ’21, shared about her interdisciplinary academic opportunities in the With Honors feature, and in “Raving Fans,” Ann ’95 and Eric Johnson ’94 explained why they still see value in an Olivet education through their career journeys and now in the lives of their children who are current students.

“A Christian education is so beneficial as our children take their first steps away from home and begin to gain independence away from parents,” reflected Ann Johnson. “ONU is a place where their foundation is built so that, after four years, students are ready to be LIGHT to others in this world using the skills and talents God has uniquely gifted them in their career path.”

Dean of online learning and the founder of Olivet’s fully-online Veritas program, Dr. Jay Martinson ’86 gave a “First Person” testimony of how Olivet provides a foundational home for students as they learn about themselves and grow in what they believe. The benediction at the end of the issue was taken from Dr. Chenoweth’s wife Tammy (Salyer) Chenoweth’s ’89 closing prayer for parents that she prayed at new student Orientation earlier this summer.

The 65-page issue also highlights news stories covering the academic accomplishments of students, faculty and alumni, and includes a Tiger Athletics photo story which emphasizes the stellar competitive performances of student athletes during the 2020-21 academic year.
