“Our student employees are critical for the work we do at Olivet,” said Dr. David Pickering ’89/’94 M.B.A., executive vice president for administration and human resources, during the awards ceremony. “The skills they learn here can transfer to their future careers. They learn good supervisory techniques by observing their supervisors.”

Austin Burdine is a senior, majoring in computer science, from Greenwood Village, Colorado. He is a student employee for Benner Library & Resource Center.

Austin’s supervisor, Matt Marcukaitis, Informatics web application manager, said in his nomination of Austin: “Austin single-handedly coded two programs, which will allow all of the library’s programs to be built into a consistent framework. His work will impact the entire library by providing a new system with permissions controlled within a single system. He is committed to helping our team prepare for this transition before he graduates in August.”

Professor Jennifer Love serves as the student employee supervisor and laboratory assistant for the Department of Biological Sciences. She supervises more than 50 student employees each semester, most of whom are teaching assistants.

Her supervisor, Dr. Mike Pyle, department chair, said in his nomination of Professor Love: “Jennifer’s door is always open to our students and student workers. She always has a professional, pleasant demeanor. She sets high standards for honesty, hard work, accountability, safety and cleanliness. And she shares freely of her professional skills in microbiology.”

Alyssa (Eilders) Bass ’13 manages all student employees and the presentation of these awards. Nominations for Olivet’s awards came from students, staff and faculty members to recognize nominees for attributes, expectations, leadership/style and impact to their department or office. Olivet’s awards ceremony also celebrated the value and contribution of Olivet students who worked in the 1,257 student jobs on campus during the 2016–2017 academic year.
