Professor Rice joined Olivet’s full-time faculty in 2018 as program director for the cybersecurity defense concentration. In this leadership role, he researched, designed, tested and launched this area of study. His motivation is the great need for trained professionals with integrity in the field of cybersecurity. As a professor, he teaches courses in cybersecurity, networking and information technology.
Known as a “pracademic,” Professor Rice is also a network and telecommunications engineer in Olivet’s Office of Information Technology. He specializes in information security, physical security and LAN/WLAN management, as well as handling project management and collaborative projects with other University staff. One of his recent successes was implementing the video surveillance system and high availability internet connectivity on campus.
His professional experience also includes co-owner of a computer consulting business, software test engineer for Tellabs Operations Inc. and software support technician for Applied Systems. He has taught courses for Olivet’s Department of Computer Science, McGraw School of Business, and School of Graduate and Continuing Studies.
Professor Rice is a member of InfraGard, (ISC)², EC-Council and is an Information Assurance Certification Review Board Professional.
He married Sheila, his best friend and college sweetheart, in 2001. They are the parents of three daughters: Eleanor; Ruth; and Naomi Joy, their daughter now in heaven. In his leisure time, he enjoys woodworking and home remodeling projects.
His favorite Bible verse is: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).
