English Major

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or minor in English is a liberal arts degree designed to allow students to double major and develop a multiple array of career choices.

While many schools focus primarily on literature, students at Olivet also complete in-depth coursework in writing, linguistics and visual literacy. Understanding the field of language arts helps lead students into a variety of professions.

Olivet students have multiple opportunities for experiential learning, whether completing a required practicum in business and technical writing or participating in service projects through the departmental honor society. Recently, students worked to collect research materials for those studying at American University in Burkina Faso, followed up by a student and faculty trip to the African nation.

To further enhance their studies, students have additional academic opportunities such as a potential semester abroad with the rigorous Oxford Studies Programme, Christmas break travel to England, and presenting research at professional conferences.

English is ideal for students who have:

  • creativity
  • imagination
  • passion for reading
  • writing skills
  • proficient grammar
