Mission

The Writing Center is committed to helping the Olivet Community communicate ideas clearly and concisely. The Writing Center provides free writing assistance that fosters high-level critical thinking skills, academic excellence in disseminating written work, professional readiness, and a scholarly agenda for undergraduate students. All services provided by the Writing Center are focused on increasing writer confidence and competence.

Writing Center Assistants

The Writing Center Assistants are undergraduate students who are prepared to assist students with writing assignments and projects across the undergraduate curricula. The Writing Center Assistants must be recommended by faculty and demonstrate advanced-level writing skills both during the interview process and throughout the academic year via consistent training sessions. The Writing Center Assistants are prepared and passionate about helping students become more competent and confident writers.

Resources

Students have access to hardcover and online documentation-style manuals—including APA, CMS, CSE, and MLA—as well as access to the Writing Center Assistants’ expertise in formatting the varied styles assigned across the undergraduate curricula.
The Writing Center also houses computers and essential materials for student use.

Writing Center Events

Throughout the academic year, the Writing Center hosts a number of specified sessions meant to draw larger groups of students to address common areas of concern such a writing citations correctly, using text evidence in mature and effective ways, and working to understand specific assignments like the annotated bibliography and the Exegesis.

Though focused and quiet work sessions are at the heart of the Writing Center, there are also events designed for students to have some fun. From a spooky story night complete with candy giveaways, to a hot chocolate bar with a final-exam themed Christmas wish list, to spring poetry readings, the Writing Center is destined to be a hub of academic activity accentuated with several entertaining events for students to release some stress and have some fun with words and snacks.
