Post-Master’s Nursing Education Certificate

A typical candidate for this track includes a nurse who has completed a master’s degree in nursing and is interested in a career in nursing education. Candidates for the Post-Master’s in certificate in Nursing Education are seeking to inspire and mold the next generation of nurses by teaching knowledge and skills required for same and competent care. Candidates enjoy serving as preceptors and helping others understand new or difficult concepts.

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
The HLC, one of six independent U.S. regional accreditors, evaluates degree-granting, post-secondary educational institutions in 19 states that comprise the North Central region. The master’s degree program in nursing and post-graduate APRN certificate program at Olivet Nazarene University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).

The Post-Master’s Education track can be completed in as little as 32 weeks with a full-time schedule.

All courses are online; however, a student is required to complete two practicum courses. One 30-hour Advanced Clinical Practicum and another 120-hour Academic Nurse Educator practicum. Both practicums are completed with an approved, self-selected preceptor.

While much of the learning takes place online, Post-Master’s Education students will need to complete their practicum hours in an approved state. Please check to see if this program meets the educational requirements with your state board of nursing.

In addition to the General Admissions Requirements, the applicant must:

• Complete an application.
• Submit transcripts from a regionally accredited college or university showing an earned Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree.
• Have attained a MSN grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better (4.0 scale).*
• Submit a current, unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license in a geographical jurisdiction of the United States.*
• Have successfully completed (defined as a grade of B- or above) within the last five years Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Health Assessment (only FNP & Education tracks).**
• Submit a signed consent regarding criminal background and drug screening requirements.
• Submit evidence of having worked as a RN for at least 2,000 hours prior to starting the respective clinical/practicum tracks (ED: NRSG 634, FNP: NRSG 665 & TL: NRSG 648).**

When choosing your career path, a Post-Master’s Nursing Education Certificate offers students ample opportunities to teach in a nursing school/program/university at various levels, such as LPN, ADN, and BSN programs. There is a growing demand for nurse educators in academia. Faculty typically make less than other graduate prepared roles there is an overwhelming need for educators.

• “According to a Special Survey on Vacant Faculty Positions released by AACN in October 2018, a total of 1,715 faculty vacancies were identified in a survey of 872 nursing schools with baccalaureate and/or graduate programs across the country (85.8% response rate). Besides the vacancies, schools cited the need to create an additional 138 faculty positions to accommodate student demand. The data show a national nurse faculty vacancy rate of 7.9%. Most of the vacancies (90.7%) were faculty positions requiring or preferring a doctoral degree.”
• In the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN’s) Vision for Academic Nursing it is mentioned that “projections indicated that retirements between 2016-2025 would equal one third of the 2015 employed faculty workforce.” and “In 2017, 55% of all nursing programs (baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral) reported insufficient number of faculty as one of the primary reasons for not admitting all qualified applicants.”
