Art Teaching

Be the Inspiration

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) or minor in Art Teaching is ideal for those students who wish to help students learn about and experience fine and applied art, such as painting and sculpture, design, photography, digital media and more.

A student's face lights up when they find success in something they create. Surrounded with creative young people, students share in the excitement about art and its history.

Art Students:

  • Study Photoshop, watercolor, history of art, ceramics, early adolescent development, teaching art in elementary schools.
  • Observe art classes in local schools. See how teachers tackle such challenges as grading art projects fairly, making classrooms safe, introducing students to art from many traditions, and teaching skills while allowing students to express themselves.
  • Do student teaching for a semester before graduation, providing the chance to put observations to the test, with guidance from an experienced teacher.
  • Discover the art of lesson planning. In this creative process, the knowledge of art history, methods, and materials mix with students' energy, interests and age level.

Student Teaching

The student teaching assignment gives experience in taking on more responsibilities for directing the learning activities of a group of students in a "real-world" classroom. The minimum time is 60 full official school days. Students are supervised by a classroom teacher, the principal of the school, and the university supervisor. A faculty member will observe on-site.

Art with a Christian Purpose

The best way to see if Olivet is a good fit for you is to visit the campus. We offer unique, customized visit days every weekday, and special Purple & Gold days, too, where you can get up close at all things ONU.
