Special Education Major

Olivet’s Special Education program prepares candidates to be skilled, knowledgeable and equipped for practice in the field. Candidates develop an understanding of the history of disability, the laws that shape and define the field and models of disability. They engage with academic and professional texts while honoring the perspectives of individuals with disabilities. Candidates also gain knowledge of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), with coursework grounded in High-Leverage Practices for Special Education, including collaboration, data-driven planning and instruction in academics and behavior. With this foundation, candidates develop the knowledge and commitment to advance a culture of inclusion in their schools.
