The Interior and Architectural Design program at Olivet Nazarene University prepares students to analyze client needs and goals to create functional spaces and improve the quality of life. Students use design software to complete project-based coursework related to architectural design, space planning, color theory, lighting design, material selection, barrier-free design, sustainable design, building systems, and safety requirements.

Each semester, the Interior and Architectural Design program sponsors trips to the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, where students attend conferences and interact with industry professionals. All students are required to complete an internship, which often leads to full-time employment.

The Interior and Architectural Design program follows the Council for Interior Design Accreditation Standards and is affiliated with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), the American Society of Interior Designers, and hosts a student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

Ideal Location

Olivet is located less than 60 miles from Chicago’s Merchandise Mart and 350 West Mart Center, home to 120 wholesale showrooms. Students experience the Mart through workshops, seminars and projects and have opportunities to present their work to professionals.

Real Life Experience

Every year, Olivet interior design students work with real clients from the local community to compete for awards in the Ugly Kitchen Contest. Those entering the competition receive valuable experience and winners receive cash prizes.

The ONU Interior Design program prepares students to be innovative and intuitive designers by keeping up with the newest designs and concepts in the field. One of my favorite aspects of the program was learning how to turn floor plans into realistic renderings.
