Kankakee Area Special Educators Symposium


The Kankakee Area Special Educators Symposium (KASES) is an annual event that is dedicated to the special education community of Kankakee and Iroquois Counties. Hosted by Olivet’s School of Education, the goal of the symposium is to provide special educators with a space for idea sharing, vision casting and vision catching, trouble shooting and problem solving.

Special Educator of the Year

The Special Educator of the Year Award will recognize two exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to students with disabilities. Any special educator from Kankakee or Iroquois County, including social workers and speech language pathologists, may be nominated for this award. Two categories of teachers will win. The Novice Special Educator of the Year award will be granted to teachers with 1-4 years of experience. The Special Educator of the Year award will go to one local special educator with 5+ years of experience.
Deadline for nomination is May 31, 2020.

Best Ideas Presentation Proposal

How are you supporting students through remote learning, or through socially distanced instruction? We are looking for individuals who will share about the the specific ways you are supporting your students. Share what you have found, and share about the process of finding it. Presentation topics can pertain to anything of relevance to the special education community. This year, we are categorizing the best ideas breakout presentations into four strands: (1) teaching and assessment, (2) managing classrooms and individuals, (3) special education mechanics and (4) research snapshots. Our local special education community benefits when teachers share their best ideas. What are yours?

Registration will open on August 1, 2020.

*Payment may come from individuals or from districts. Before registering, please check with your special education coordinator (or other school administrator) to ask whether your district will arrange payments for the event. 

New for KASES 2020

Social workers and Speech/Language Pathologists invited!

In addition to special education teachers, we are also welcoming the full involvement of social workers and speech/language pathologist. These professionals are invited to submit best ideas presentations and is eligible for nominations as Special Educators of the Year. 

Illinois Council for Exceptional Children (ICEC) Partnership

ICEC is excited about the KASES endeavor, and has agreed to partner with our local event. This institutional affiliation links KASES with the special education research advocacy group that has been working for our students for decades at the state and federal levels.
