MSN: Family Nurse Practitioner FAQs

The MSN Family Nurse Practitioner program is designed for registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree who want to further their career as a nurse practitioner.

This program is for currently registered nurses. The MSN-FNP program is designed for individuals who desire to further their nursing education beyond a bachelors degree or RN License.

If you’ve completed your BSN and wish to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, this Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP) program is designed for you. In this program, you will develop, test, and evaluate ideas relevant to nursing practice, along with critically examining concepts and theories in relation to health issues and nursing research.

  • Master of Science in Nursing FNP: 720 clinical hours

While much of the learning takes place online, MSN-FNP students will need to complete their practicum hours in an approved state. Please click here to see if this program meets the educational requirements of professional licensure in your state.

In addition to the General Admissions Requirements, the applicant must:

  • Complete an application.
  • Submit transcripts from any accredited institutions attended, where pre-requisites for a nursing program Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) nursing courses were completed and any completed nursing graduate coursework.
  • Have attained a BSN undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better (4.0 scale).*
  • Submit a current, unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license in a geographical jurisdiction of the United States.*
  • Have successfully completed (defined as a grade of C or above) an approved undergraduate statistics course. An official transcript for the same should be submitted.
  • Submit a signed consent regarding criminal background and drug screening requirements.
  • Submit evidence of having worked as a RN for at least 2,000 hours prior to starting the respective clinical/practicum tracks (ED: NRSG 634, FNP: NRSG 665 & TL: NRSG 648).**
  • Students may not be admitted to the Olivet MSN program who have been dismissed from another MSN program.

The Family Nurse Practitioner program focuses on applying previously gained knowledge and skills in the provision of advanced nursing care to individuals, families, and communities. Emphasis is placed on health promotion, disease prevention, and clinical management of clients with common acute and chronic illness.

Yes, the MSN-FNP is a full-time program that can be completed as quickly as 24 months with 52-credit hours that consists of online instruction. It combines online learning with practical, hands-on clinical practice. (The Accelerated MSN-FNP option would double up on classes.)

Post-Master’s Nursing Education Certificate FAQs

Most students complete the admissions process in a couple of weeks. Courses start several times a year. You will be in class before you know it!

Olivet is approved in many states, but please check your State’s Board of Nursing website and/or State’s Higher Education Board to confirm. All courses are online, however, a student is required to complete a 120-hour practicum course with an approved, self-selected preceptor towards the end of the track. Students must hold an active, unencumbered nursing license in the state they plan to complete their practicum.

In addition to the General Admissions Requirements, the applicant must:

  • Submit an official transcript from a regionally accredited college or university showing an earned Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree.
  • Have attained a MSN GPA fo 3.0 or better (4.0 scale).*
  • Submit a current, unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license in a geographical jurisdiction of the United States.*
  • Have successfully completed (defined as a grade of B- or above) within the last five years Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology, Advanced Health Assessment (only FNP & Education tracks). **
  • Submit a signed consent regarding criminal background and drug screening requirements.
  • Submit evidence of having worked as a RN for at least 2,000 hours prior to starting the respective clinical/practicum tracks (ED: NRSG 634, FNP: NRSG 665 & TL: NRSG 648).**
