Spiritual Life

Chapel and Community Worship

Chapel

Chapel is a vital part of community life at Olivet.  Through these services, every group from our campus community has the opportunity to join together for worship, instruction and encouragement to serve.   Special emphases such as Advent, Holy Week, and Communion are part of the spiritual life of our campus community.

To help us all focus, each semester has a special chapel theme that includes an emphasis from one of the following four areas:  Heart, Head, Hands and Habits.  These themes are rotated, so each one is covered twice over a four-year period.  First in the rotation is the emphasis of Heart, which is the wellspring of life itself, and the seat of our emotions and passions.  What flows out of our heart shapes our life, so our desire is to live and serve from a healthy heart.  Next is Head, where believing our faith is reasonable, desiring to know what we believe is imperative, and understanding why this shapes who we are as we live out our faith in the world.  The next is a flow into Hands, and answering the question: How then should we live?  The things we do as people of the Kingdom of God will be examined, as a community we seek to find ways to live and serve in our world.  The fourth emphasis will be Habits, or what we do to enable us to live the life we are called to live.  The importance of key practices, which enable us to live out our faith and help us to maintain it at the same time, will be taught.

Beginning in the spring of 2011, chapel will be held in the Kenneth and Betty Hawkins Centennial Chapel every Wednesday and Thursday from 9:35-10:15.  During special emphasis weeks, like fall and spring revival and Homecoming week, there may be exceptions made concerning the week day and number of days attendance is required.

Local churches

In addition to attending chapel, students are encouraged to find a church home in the surrounding area.  There are a variety of Nazarene churches, as well as churches representing every faith tradition and denomination.  Most churches are just a short drive from our campus.
