Counseling Services

Individual Counseling

Counseling is available to students needing assistance with educational planning and social or personal concerns. Students will find a ready acceptance from the counseling staff. The counseling services are for voluntary use and without charge. A professional code of ethics is observed. Examples of these include confidentiality, respect, and referral (when appropriate).

If you are new to counseling

Counseling can be intimidating if you have never tried it before. Many students find it difficult to share their private struggles with a stranger. However, most students find that their comfort level increases quickly – usually after just one or two sessions. Please know, the counselors are not trying to judge you. Our counselors are very compassionate, caring people who genuinely want to help people feel better. A counselor will allow you to move at your own pace and will make every effort to help you feel comfortable. If your feelings of discomfort remain, tell your counselor. He/she will want to know how you are feeling, and will work with you to find ways to help you be more comfortable, and progress to where you want to be.

Many students worry about the stigma of counseling and believe that only those who are “crazy” need counseling. Rest assured that most of our clients have very “normal” concerns – they are dealing with issues that many people deal with and are in no way “crazy.” Asking for help with a problem is not a sign that you are weak or defective. Seeking another’s perspective can be a very mature way of dealing with stress.
