Training and Tutorial

Is there training required before IRB application approval?

Answer: Yes

All research involving human subjects that is conducted at or sponsored by Olivet Nazarene University, whether funded or unfunded and whether conducted by ONU faculty, students, or others, must comply with applicable policies for the protection of human subjects. The Human Subjects/Institutional Review Board (IRB) is given broad authority and wide-ranging responsibilities for ensuring the ethical and legal conduct of human subjects research at ONU. The IRB follows widely accepted ethical principles, legally binding federal regulations, campus policies, procedures, and practices, and other guidelines in carrying out this important responsibility. Any individual that research requires IRB approval, must submit a completed certificate showing that they have completed the necessary tutorial training. The IRB committee will not provide approval unless the certificate is submitted with the application.

Depending on the type of research, the following individuals may require training:
  1. Doctoral students
  2. Doctoral advisers
  3. Students conducting research that is non-class related and under the guidance of a faculty member.
  4. Individuals applying to conduct research utilizing Olivet’s students, faculty, staff, or administrators.

Required Tutorial

To fulfill the application process, a researcher seeking IRB approval must complete the following tutorial. This free, web-based course provides information about the protection, rights, and welfare of human subjects in research projects. This tutorial also explains the responsibility of the researcher to keep these risks to a minimum. The course must be completed in one sitting. The tutorial does not allow the participant to begin and then return after an interruption. The research course is required for all researchers. The certificate at the end of the training session must be printed and submitted with your application to the IRB at ONU.

In order to access the training course, please follow the following steps:

STEP 1
Access the University of California-Irvine’s Web site here.

STEP 2
In the box, select the option: “No, I want to take the tutorial as a visitor.” Submit.

STEP 3
Select “Human Research Tutorial” and continue.

STEP 4
Using the directions, proceed through the tutorial. When finished, please print the screen that begins with “Congratulations! You have successfully completed the human tutorial as a visitor.” This printed page must be submitted with your application. This can be attached to the IRB application, or mailed separately to the IRB Chair (if the application is submitted electronically). Applications will not be approved or reviewed until the completion page is received.
