A COMPARISON: ANNUAL GIFTS AND PLANNED GIFTS

Regular gifts through the FRIENDS OF OLIVET giving program (often called “ANNUAL GIFTS”) are so important because they offset tuition charges for students.

Most Friends of Olivet gifts are directed to scholarships. Others are designated, by donors, to help pay for campus projects or programs.

Generally, Planned Giving refers to gifts that are deferred, or given now and put to use later. But some planned gifts, such as a Gift Annuity or an Endowed Scholarship, help a student both today and tomorrow.

Bequests and Charitable Trusts are valuable ways to ensure a secure future for Olivet students and programs – these funds will be used at a later date.

Some of these planned gifts actually benefit both the donor and the student.

FRIENDS OF OLIVET ANNUAL GIVING PROGRAM

Friends of Olivet Annual Giving is the program for alumni, parents, and friends of the University to provide regular gifts in support of “Education With a Christian Purpose.” When you make a gift through Friends of Olivet Annual Giving, you are supporting the following areas:
  • Scholarships
  • Annual capital improvements
  • Special designated programs
  • General University needs

Friends of Olivet gifts can be made with cash, check, credit cards, securities, or other property. To give online, click here.

PLANNED GIFTS

An increasing number of Olivet’s friends are enjoying the benefit and satisfaction of planned gifts that can help both donor and student.

Gift Annuities are the most popular form of planned gifts made during one’s lifetime. Your Olivet gift annuity makes generous lifetime payments to you, while helping Olivet students both today and tomorrow. In addition, there are significant tax advantages.

Contact the Olivet Nazarene University Office of Development for further information and our OLIVET GIFT ANNUITIES brochure. The minimum amount for a Charitable Gift Annuity is $5,000.

Charitable Trusts of many varieties have provided many friends of Olivet a generous income, tax benefits and the satisfaction of knowing that their charitable trust will make all the difference financially for future Olivetians.

One of many advantages of a trust through the Olivet Nazarene University Foundation is the opportunity to individually tailor a trust to fulfill specific needs of the donor.

Olivet’s planned giving staff will be happy to talk with anyone about gift annuities and charitable trusts, and answer any questions. Information is also available online through the Olivet Nazarene University Planned Giving Center site.

In addition to gift annuities, trust, and bequests, other planned giving vehicles can be just the right opportunity, depending on one’s individual circumstances. These can include gifts of Life Insurance, a Life Estate Agreement (deeding a home or farm to Olivet while residing there), Testamentary Trusts, gifts through a qualified retirement plan, a “bargain sale” of property, and others.

BEQUESTS

Bequests are an important element in the income for most schools and charities, and this is very true for Olivet. Bequests of all sizes from many individuals have funded scholarships, chapel programs, buildings, research projects, and other programs that enrich the education and lives of Olivet students.

Olivet’s Will Planning Kit is an excellent tool for preparing or updating one’s will or living trust. These are free from the Olivet Nazarene University Office of Development, and can provide excellent insight as well as save valuable time when preparing for an appointment with an attorney for estate planning. Staff are prepared to help you in the planning process and discuss those issues to assure that your wishes will be carried out in a logical and legal manner.

The Olivet Heritage Society is one way we express gratitude for those who include Olivet in their estate plans. Please let us know if you plan to help future Olivetians through your will or living trust.

ENDOWMENTS

Endowed Scholarships can be established through all of the above planned gifts, as well as through gifts of cash, property, or securities. The Olivet Nazarene University Foundation manages and awards these important scholarships in ways that exemplify the best ideals in Christian stewardship.
