ORIENTATION 6/12/2008 9:00 AM

Click on the word "Orientation" above to register

Orientation begins Thursday, with a dessert reception for the family and late-night activities. Thursday’s activities are not required, but they will give you a chance to begin meeting your fellow classmates and will be especially helpful for those still looking to find a roommate. If you are arriving Thursday evening, you should first check in at the lobby of the Parrott Convocation/Athletic Center to receive your lodging assignments and keys. Registration for Orientation will be on Friday, from 9–11 a.m. in the Weber Center. For those taking ACT or CLEP exams, see the enclosed schedule for arrival details. Orientation will conclude around 12 p.m. on Saturday.

During Orientation, you will begin the registration process for classes, meet with your academic adviser and advising group, become acquainted with faculty members and administrative personnel, and sign up for a room in a residence hall. Rooms are chosen on a priority system, based on the order in which your enrollment deposit was received. You must have submitted your enrollment deposit in order to sign up for classes and your room. Please remember to have submitted, or bring with you, the following items before Orientation:

  • $500 enrollment deposit (recommended to submit online)
  • Final transcripts (bring with you)
  • Immunization records (bring with you)
  • Free Orientation housing will be provided in the residence halls for students and parents. Linens (pillow, blanket, sheets, towels, washcloths) will be supplied. Room keys may be picked up when you arrive on campus — whether it is Wednesday (for CLEP), Thursday or Friday — in the Parrott Convocation/Athletic Center.

Please contact the Office of Admissions at 800-648-1463 or 815-939-5203 if you would like assistance with directions to Bourbonnais, or if you require transportation from a Chicago airport or train station (please give us a two weeks’ notice).

MUSIC All students (majors and non-majors) interested in music at Olivet Nazarene University must attend an informational session on Friday, at 9:30 a.m. Sign-up is not necessary. Auditions for placement in private lessons and class instruction in vocal and instrumental music will take place at this time. The audition material should consist of high school contest solos if possible. Accompanists will be provided as needed. Those interested in pursuing a major or minor in Music will be required to take a brief music theory placement exam at the end of that meeting. Choral and instrumental ensemble auditions will be held the first week of the fall semester. For more information, contact the Department of Music at 800-648-1463.

MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT EXAM For registration in mathematics courses numbered 103 or higher, an ACT math score of 19 or higher or an SAT math score of 450 or higher is required. Students with lower scores must take developmental/remedial mathematics courses that do not apply toward degree requirements at Olivet. A mathematics placement exam will be given at 10:15 a.m. in Wisner Hall, room 137 for all students who have not attained the necessary ACT or SAT scores. While calculators will not be provided, you may use your own four-function calculator for the test. It is strongly recommended that students who have not attained the appropriate ACT or SAT math scores take this placement test during orientation. Passing this placement exam would enable students to enroll in Math 103 or higher classes. .

ACT INFORMATION ACT testing will begin Thursday at 1 p.m. and will last approximately four hours in Wisner Hall, room 137. The ACT is required of all freshmen. The $35 charge will be collected at the time of testing. If you have already taken the ACT, be sure the results were sent to Olivet. If you would like to try to improve your score, talk to your admissions counselor first to determine the benefits. .

COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM (CLEP) Incoming freshmen who rank in the upper 10 percent of their graduating class, score within the top 10 percent on the ACT or SAT, or otherwise demonstrate excellence in certain academic areas are encouraged to consider establishing credit by examination. All tests are in the Burke Administration Building, fourth floor. Since a portion of the test must be sent directly to CLEP, please do not fill out the checks until you arrive for testing at the Burke. If payment for CLEP is by check, you will need two checks for each test taken. If you have questions, contact the Office of the Registrar at 800-648-1463. (See following page for more details on fees for each CLEP.) .

The CLEP tests are computer-based tests. Access to a guide for taking CLEP tests on computer can be viewed at www.collegeboard.com/clep. The times scheduled for the tests on Thursday, are the following:

  • English 7:30 a.m.
  • Natural Science 9:30 a.m.
  • Math 12:30 p.m.
  • Social Science 2:30 p.m.
  • Humanities 4:30 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: A photo identification card (e.g., driver’s license) is required for ACT and CLEP testing.
