Writing

  • Available as a minor
Writing is important to all professions — from education to ministry to business to the social services.

  • Celebrate your love for language with a minor in writing!

At Olivet, you will learn from professors who will not only challenge you academically, but who also care about your personal and professional success. Our department is small enough for faculty to know our students on a first name basis. They help to broaden the student experience through a variety of cultural and literary events, in the community, in Chicago, and abroad.

The writing minor has two distinct focuses: business tech or creative writing. In each concentration, students will practice the craft of writing, as well as learn about writing and writers.

The students complete a one-credit course to put together a portfolio of polished work and submit it for publication, graduate school admission, and/or to potential employers.

Students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with English faculty members and other professionals in the writing field. They can complete a 30-hour practicum experience as part of the business and tech class. Within the area, students have gained writing experience with local nonprofits, hospitals, city and park districts and corporations like Peddinghaus.

    Careers

Alumni careers include: editing, publishing, freelance writing, communication jobs, journalism, business/marketing/finance jobs, political fields, and ministry.

Writing is part of the Department of English and Modern Languages within the College of Arts and Sciences.
