Family and Consumer Sciences Major

  • Available as major (B.S. degree) and minor, with concentrations in hospitality and family studies
    Be the spark to ignite the flame of love, commitment, health and happiness for today’s families. With a degree in family and consumer sciences, you can influence others in meaningful ways that will enrich their homes and communities.

    We have designed this program especially for you. Build on your interest in working in family and community services or family resource management.

    Choose a concentration in hospitality or family studies to sharpen your focus.

    At Olivet, you can: 

    • Study nutrition in health/fitness, consumer economics, sociology of the family, professionalism — all with a Christian perspective. 
    • Prepare well for your future career. Be endorsed in family studies and hospitality with your four-year degree.

    Putting knowledge to work

    A five-hour internship is required for this program. Our students have completed internships with a variety of local and national companies, including: Youth for Christ, Sunrise Health Foods, Chic Weddings Inc., St. Bernard Hospital, Butterfield Court Senior Living, University of Illinois Extension Service.

    American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a national certification exam for the family and consumer sciences professional (CFCS).

    Possible careers include: banking, business ownership, party planning, event planning, consumer services
