Master of Science in Nursing
Dr. Linda Davison, Ed.D, RN, Department Chair
The purpose of Olivet’s graduate program leading to a master’s of science degree in nursing is to provide a curriculum plan for guiding the learner with the intention of broadening the theoretical knowledge base of the learner in preparation for a leadership role and/or doctoral study. The nurse at the master’s level develops, tests and evaluates concepts relevant to nursing, critically examines concepts and theories in relation to health issues, initiates nursing research, and practices nursing in multiple dynamic roles.
The MSN program is a 32-credit-hour program in three specific areas of role concentration: nursing education, management and leadership, and emergency preparedness disaster readiness. All learners are provided the opportunity to develop a theoretical base of nursing science. Consistent with this opportunity, learners participate in plenary sessions, global learning experiences, and practicums that will heighten their professional readiness for their career as leaders in the profession.
Learners who select education as their area of role concentration are provided the opportunity of practicum experiences drawing from the theoretical base of the educational process. Learners who select management and leadership as their area of role concentration are provided the opportunity to develop a personal theory that will frame successful administrative leadership. Learners selecting the emergency preparedness disaster readiness will integrate and apply concepts related to emergency and disaster nursing practices through simulated and actual practicum experience. Learning is facilitated through mentors and guided practicums that will enhance transition to a leadership role.
