KENOSHA, Wis. – Junior Rachel Carman (Keokuk, Iowa) and sophomore Jacqueline Fayne (Chicago, Ill.) wasted no time posting NAIA Indoor Track and Field national qualification marks at the 2013 Private College Invitational hosted by Carthage College (Wis.) on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Olivet Nazarene University women’s indoor track and field team had an impressive opening season meet, including winning three events and placing second in seven.
Carman’s high jump mark of 1.64m (5 feet, 4.5 inches) currently ranks 2nd nationally and is a new school record and personal best. Senior Kaitlin Loos (Sterling, Ill.) placed right behind Carman, jumping 1.47m (4 feet, 9.75 inches). Fayne, a triple jumper, finished the day at 10.92m (35 feet, 10 inches), also a new personal best. Freshman Taneka Lawson (Toledo, Ohio) placed second in the long jump in just her first collegiate meet, finishing at 5.22m (17 feet, 1.5 inches).
Top performances on the track came included sophomore Alexis Davis (Trotwood, Ohio) who placed second in the 55m dash and the 200m dash, crossing the line at 7.50 and 26.92, respectively. Sophomore Alexandra Ortiz (Ottawa, Ill.) and freshman Kalla Gold (Eureka, Ill.) placed one-two in the 400m dash finishing at 1:01.99 and 1:02.43. Senior Jillian Versweyveld (Delavan, Wis.) took second in the 800m run, crossing at 2:36.05.
The Tigers dominated the mile run, placing 11 of the first 13 runners. Junior Christy Trank (Winnebago, Ill.) captured the meet title with a 5:18.87 time. Teammates senior Kortney Ellingboe (Hamilton, Ill.) and junior Chantalle Falconer (Bryon, Ill.) finished right behind at 5:18.91 and 5:23.73, respectively.
“This was a great opening meet for the team with six total national meet qualifiers and several other athletes who showed they’re ready to complete at that level,” said head coach Mike McDowell. “This was the most complete opening performance of any ONU team I’ve coached with every event group on the team contributing.”
Olivet will return to action as a split-squad on January 18-19. Part of the Tigers will travel to the Mike Lints Open at Grand Valley State University on Friday, while the remainder of the team will compete at the Rocky Rococo Invite hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
