BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The No. 16 Olivet Nazarene University crushed Trinity Christian College (Ill.) 112-67 in the opening round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament on Monday, February 18. This win advances Olivet to the Quarterfinals to face Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.).
Junior Taylor Haymes (Wentzville, Mo.) led the Tigers (23-7) as the top scorer with 16 points, while sophomore Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich.) added 14 points and senior Danielle Tolbert (Pontiac, Mich.) 12. The Tigers continued to be aggressive stealing the ball 32 times from the Trolls, led by Tolbert with 9. Senior Rachel Kearney (Marion, Iowa) and freshman Cortney Allenbaugh (Morton, Ill.) both added 11 points on the night.
“We came out a little slow and didn’t shoot the ball well, “said head coach Lauren Stamatis. “To Trinity Christian’s credit, they came out hard and with a lot of energy. We finally fell into a rhythm in the second half and were able to start hitting some shots.”
In the first half, the Tigers shot a mere 5-of-31 (.161) from behind the three-point line, finding themselves trailing mid-way through the half but recovered enough to take a 49-41 lead into the locker room. The second half was a different story as the Tigers were able to find their rhythm and take advantage of a tired Trolls team. Olivet outscored Trinity Christian by 37 points in the second half, not allowing a basket for the first five minutes.
On Wednesday, February 20 Olivet will travel to Purdue University-Calumet hoping to get some revenge on the Peregrine who beat the Tigers late in the season to dash hopes of winning the regular season conference title. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
