BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The No. 13 Olivet Nazarene University women’s basketball team learned an important lesson in their game with Holy Cross College on Wednesday, Nov. 14. They learned they need to finish strong. The Tigers escaped with a 105-95 win over the Saints, but not without a good fight.

“Holy Cross beat us on the boards and out played us the second half,” said head coach Lauren Stamatis after the game. “They have really stepped up their play over the last year. Our girls didn’t come out ready to play the second half, but fortunately we were able to hold on to the lead in the last stretch.”

Olivet (3-0, 3-0) set the tone early in the game. Junior Liz Bart (Cary, Ill.) and sophomore Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich.) had posted double digits in the scoring column already. Bart shot 4-of-6 from the three-point arch and had 13 points. Wilson was 4-of-7 in field goals and a perfect 3-of-3 at the stripe for 11 points. The Tigers took a 67-43 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Saints (1-4, 0-2) came out strong. They finished the game with higher shooting percentages than the Tigers as they kept chipping away at the Tiger’s lead. Down the stretch, they pulled to within five, but fatigue set in with just ten players to rotate in to keep up with the high tempo style of Olivet.

Bart finished the night with a team high 17 points and Wilson added 16. Senior Nikki Dier (Temperance, Mich.) came through big for the Tigers, scoring 12 points, 4-of-8 in both field goal and three-point shooting. She also dished out three assists and pulled in four rebounds. Sophomore Bridgette Jones (Seymour, Ind.) contributed 11 points and four steals, while junior Taylor Haymes added nine points. Junior Miranda Geever (Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Tai Peachy (Galesburg, Ill. ) combined for 11 assists, dishing out six and five respectively.

The Tigers will travel to Indiana University-South Bend on Saturday, Nov. 17 for a 1:00 (EST) tip-off.
