Ty'Rel Fields and 4x400m relay team broke the school record and qualified for national meet at GVSU Big Meet
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Tigers showed up and performed well again for a fifth straight weekend during a great 2013 indoor season so far. ONU had four athletes and one relay qualify for the national meet and five records broken or tied during the GVSU Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State University (Mich.), Friday and Saturday, February 8 and 9.
The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Sam Willis (Freeport, Ill.), junior Ross Johnson (Newton, Ill.), junior Rey Keys (Matteson, Ill.) and senior Ty’Rel Fields (Huntsville, Ala.) broke the school record and qualified for the national meet with a time of 3:18.97 (finishing second).
Junior Ethan Gallagher (Parsippany, N.J.) won the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:25.17 and broke the school record while qualifying for the NAIA “A” standard. He also ran the second fastest time in the NAIA this year.
Sophomore Marshall Hawn (Goshen, Ind.) came in fifth in the 800 meter run (1:55. 11), broke the school record and qualified for nationals.
Senior Nicholas Mizeur (Moline, Ill.) finished 12th in the 800 meter run (1:56.27) and qualified for the national meet.
Ty’Rel Fields finished ninth in the 400 meter with a time of 49.79 and tied the school record. Freshman Jacob Armbrust (Metamora, Ill.) broke the freshman school record in the weight throw while finishing 25th (14.95m).
Other top performances included: Ross Johnson finished 15th in the 600 meter run (1:23.58). Sophomore Lucas Limberg (Rockford, Ill.) finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.95m. Sophomore Isaac Austin (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished fourth (4.70m) and sophomore Brian Michell (Reed City, Mich.) finished fifth (4.70m) in the pole vault. Jacob Armbrust finished 10th in the shot put (15.47m). Freshman Delano Harris-Samuels (Bourbonnais, Ill.) finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 6.94m.
ONU will be back in action on Saturday, February 16, at the NCCAA Indoor National Meet in Marion, Ind.
