MOBILE, Ala. — After winning two USTA/ITA Central-East Regional championships three weeks prior, seniors Julian Kurz (Stuttgart, Germany) and Diego Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) represented the Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala from October 11-13.
Together they competed in the NAIA Men’s Doubles bracket and Kurz competed in the NAIA Men’s Singles bracket.
In Singles play, Kurz finished fifth overall out of eight competitors. After losing his first match to Bogajo from Lindsey Wilson (6-1, 6-4) he responded with a win in the consolation bracket over Kliskinic from Concordia-Irvine (Calif.) (4-6, 6-4, 4-0 (ret.)). Kurz went on to the win the consolation bracket championship for fifth place over Marek Ondruj from the University of the Southwest (N.M.) (6-4, 6-4).
In Doubles, Gonsalvez and Kurz finished fourth of eight teams. They won their first match over a team from Lindsey Wilson upsetting the fourth seed (6-3, 6-2). In the semifinals they lost to the No. 1-seed from Embry-Riddle (Fla.) (6-2, 6-3). In the third place game the ONU team lost to the second seeded team from Westmost College (Calif.) (6-2, 7-6, (7)).
The USTA-ITA National Small College Championships ends the Tiger’s fall season.
