“We are paving the way for more students to gain real-life skills and experience, and to succeed in their future careers.” — Rachel Schramm, sophomore PR major

The full-service public relations agency run by Olivet Nazarene University students is developing its first campaigns for two large organizations in the community around the University’s main campus. Student PR practitioners are gaining professional experience, and clients are benefitting from the high-quality work of students learning their craft through cutting-edge instruction and training.

The current client roster for Olivet’s Inspired Strategies Agency includes the Kankakee County (Illinois) Chamber of Commerce and the Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra. “Students have opportunities to interact with and work as professionals,” says Professor Liz Kerns, faculty advisor. “They are learning how to work within an organizational hierarchy with me as an experienced professor and with one another as a team in serving our clients. We keep focus on the needs of the client while using every opportunity to teach professional skills and apply them.”

A group of Olivet public relations and strategic communication majors recently established the Olivet Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) club. They applied for an official charter as a chapter of the national PRSSA organization. PRSSA National is affiliated with the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the world’s largest public relations industry organization for professional development, standards and advocacy. The Suburban Chicago PRSA chapter has agreed to sponsor the Olivet PRSSA chapter.

“I’m excited about the opportunity we have to start PRSSA at Olivet,” says Rachel Schramm (sophomore, Roseville, Michigan), chapter president. “We are paving the way for more students to gain real-life skills and experience, and to succeed in their future careers.”

Schramm and Professor Kerns attended the PRSSA 2015 National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, where Schramm networked with members of other student chapters as well as professionals in public relations, media relations and advertising.
