High school students entering their senior year are invited to attend Olivet's second annual Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) on July 10, 2014. Students must apply by no later than June 1.
The program consists of an intensive, two-day training course on Olivet's campus followed by a three-week online course. The coursework focuses on six key aspects of leadership, including communication, conflict management and goal setting. Completion of the course offers students not only the benefit of leadership training, but also three hours of college credit applicable to either a leadership minor or an elective credit.
“Whether in public or private schools or homeschooled, many young people want to be positive influences on culture rather than being passively influenced by culture,” said Dr. Jay Martinson, chair of Olivet’s communication department and program director. “The SLI includes an inward focus challenging students to take inventory of their individual strengths.”
To apply, interested students should first complete the application found on Olivet’s website. Each student also needs to submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach or pastor plus a 400-word essay describing a past situation in which he/she exhibited leadership qualities. All documents need to be submitted by June 1, 2014.
The first 50 applicants accepted will receive a full-tuition scholarship to the Institute — a $1,230 value. They will still be required to pay the $179 fee for room and board during the on-campus portion of the Institute.
