During a ceremony on December 18, 2012, at Olivet’s Student Life and Recreation Center, energy provider Commonwealth Edison Company
(ComEd) honored Olivet for placing sustainability at the heart of its newest construction project. Recognizing Olivet’s foresight and accomplishments in the area of energy stewardship, ComEd Account Manager Laz Herrera presented to the University $276,476 in financial incentives through ComEd’s Smart Ideas for Your Business® New Construction Service.
The 168,000-square-foot facility features a high performance building design and “green” features —including an advanced geothermal system for efficient heating and cooling — that will achieve an estimated annual energy savings of more than 2.7 million kilowatt hours. Olivet and its design team, Elara Engineering
, worked directly with the ComEd New Construction team to prioritize technologies that maximized energy savings and incentives. Elara provided the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Information Technology (MEPFPIT) systems for the building.
Accepting the incentives from ComEd on behalf of the University, Dr. John C. Bowling, University president, said, “This building provides us with an opportunity to teach our students about stewardship. We thank ComEd for helping us do that.”
Mr. Herrera added, “This incentive recognizes Olivet’s commitment to energy efficiency. We were thrilled to provide financial support and technical resources to help them achieve their sustainability goals.”
ComEd’s New Construction Service helps identify and offset the cost of energy efficiency strategies for new construction and major renovation projects. ComEd has partnered with Nicor Gas
to serve building owners in northern Illinois.
