 Dr. Murphy began teaching in what was then the Division of Religion at Olivet Nazarene University in the fall of 1992. He brought with him training and experience from diverse disciplines encompassing science, education and religion.

While a student majoring in medical technology at West Virginia in 1972, he realized God’s call into full-time Christian service. He then transferred to Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tenn., where he completed a B.S. in biology with minors in chemistry and religion (1976). While at Trevecca, he also completed the course of study for secondary education, eventually culminating in West Virginia state certification for teaching grades 7-12.

Between his work at Trevecca and entering Nazarene Theological Seminary, Dr. Murphy served as a substitute teacher and tutor in West Virginia public schools. It was during this time that he married Connie Slusser Murphy of Fairmont, West Virginia.

Dr. Murphy completed his work at Nazarene Theological Seminary and received a Master of Divinity degree in 1981. He then went on to complete a Master of Theology at Duke University in 1983 in New Testament studies. After Duke, Dr. Murphy completed his Ph.D. at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Before coming to Olivet, Dr. Murphy served as a pastor in Charlottesville, Va. In 1992, he completed a B.S. in Medical Technology at West Virginia University. His academic achievements earned him the B.F. Love Award there. In 1993 he was ordained as an elder in the Church of the Nazarene, West Virginia North District.

At Olivet, Dr. Murphy has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, particularly in New Testament studies. He and his wife, Connie, attend College Church of the Nazarene. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the Wesleyan Theological Society, and the Chicago Society of Biblical Research.
