School of Theology and Christian Ministry

Ph.D., 2004, University of Notre Dame
M.Div., 1993, Asbury Theological Seminary
B.A., 1987, Frostburg State University

Dr. Lowery teaches classes in ethics, philosophy and theology. His reading competency in French, German, Greek and Latin have proven valuable in his research and writing.

He has published a number of scholarly articles and chapters, and has authored two books – The Maturity of Belief: Critically Assessing Religious Faith and Salvaging Wesley’s Agenda: A New Paradigm for Wesleyan Virtue Ethics. Prominent Methodist scholars have referred to him as a “groundbreaking” author in Wesley research and as “a major contributor to the construction of new Wesleyan theologies for our day.”

He completed his undergraduate education at Frostburg State University with majors in physics and mathematics, as well as a minor in computer science. For several years, he worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry.

After earning a M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary, he was ordained by the Wesleyan Church. He served ten years in pastoral ministry, four years as a youth pastor and six years as a senior pastor. Under his leadership, the average attendance in one church doubled over a three-year period.

During his last five years of pastoral ministry, Dr. Lowery was also a Christian school administrator. In addition, he has served as a board member of an independent holiness camp in southwestern Pennsylvania, holding the offices of vice president and secretary.

Awarded a Presidential Fellowship at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Lowery earned his Ph.D. in moral theology with a minor in science and religion. His academic specializations and interests include moral philosophy; Enlightenment thought (especially Kant); and the interaction of ethics with science and religion.

In 2012, he received Olivet's Samuel L. Mayhugh Award for Scholarly Excellence. Since 2007, he has received several research grants, including one in economics with Dr. Paul Koch, business professor at Olivet, for their project exploring the intersection between capitalism and Wesleyan theology.

He is a member of several professional societies, including: Wesleyan Theological Society, American Academy of Religion, Wesleyan Philosophical Society, Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, Society of Christian Philosophers, Theta Phi (religion), Sigma Pi Sigma (physics), Kappa Mu Epsilon (mathematics), Phi Eta Sigma (honor society) and MENSA. He has also been listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

Since the age of three, Dr. Lowery has been singing and playing gospel music in churches, camps and other public venues. He recorded two albums as a young child and has appeared on five other commercial recordings. Several times each year, he and his extended family — who have been singing and performing instrumental music together for more than 25 years — continue to appear in musical concerts. He is also a regular speaker in churches and camps around the country.

He and his wife, Amy, are the parents of two children, Rebecca and Seth. His leisure interests include reading, music, chess, puzzles (of all sorts) and sports. He is also an avid fan of Notre Dame football and University of Maryland men’s basketball.

Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.
