Dr. Thompson is the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as the Dean of the School of Professional Studies and Director of the Doctor of Education in Ethical Leadership program. Prior to this role, he served as chair of the Social Work and Criminal Justice Department.
His academic and professional interests include leadership; positive youth development using a strengths-based approach to working with youth and their communities; not-for-profit and organizational management; and fundraising.
A licensed social worker in the state of Indiana and an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene, his service history includes pastor in Nazarene churches in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Indiana; school social worker; and executive director of a faith-based community ministry.
He holds a Certificate in Fund Raising Management from The Fund Raising School, which is a program of The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. His professional writing includes articles for local newspaper columns; grants for funding; a textbook chapter on conflict management in the church; and Conflict Management for Faith Leaders, published in 2014 by Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City.
In 2007, Dr. Thompson was awarded the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award by the Nazarene Bible College. He received the Professional of the Year Award from the Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Currently, he serves on the board of directors for United Way of Kankakee and Iroquois Counties, and chairs the Endowment Committee.
His hobbies include fishing, reading, old cars, visiting historical sites and photography. He and his wife, Martha, have one daughter, Rebekah, who resides in Indiana with her husband, Josh, and their children, Jonah and Kaylin.
