In December 2011, he created Benner Library’s new Department of Digital Initiatives, which guides open access publishing initiatives, such as the Digital Commons; creates new online spaces for new digitized content; and makes once invisible archived material visible to the world.

During his career at Olivet, he has managed various departments of the library, including reference, government documents, interlibrary loan, circulation and library technology. He has also taught library research techniques and technologies in both the traditional undergraduate program and in the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies.

Before coming to Olivet, Professor Hippenhammer worked as a journalist; and as a children’s librarian in public libraries in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and Decatur, Ill. He also served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

He is an active writer and has written more than 160 articles, books and book reviews. Topics vary widely, including technology, library science, local history, general interest items, children’s literature, fantasy and science fiction. See his publication list at

Professor Hippenhammer is a member of the American Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, and Association of Christian Librarians. He has also been active in the Library Information Technology Association, Association of Library Services for Children, and Illinois Library Association.

He and his wife, Linda, are serving in part-time medical mission work in several overseas countries, particularly in the 10/40 window.
