Joining Olivet Nazarene University in 2001, Professor Hyma, ATC serves as the director of the CAAHEP-accredited Athletic Training Education Program. He is the instructor for Introduction to Athletic Training, Upper and Lower Extremity Evaluation, two AT clinical courses, as well as the lead instructor for the Senior Research Capstone Experience. He also practices clinically, serving as the certified athletic trainer for the men’s basketball team.
His first five years at Olivet, Professor Hyma served as the head athletic trainer, overseeing the medical care of ONU’s 18 varsity sports. Prior to Olivet, he worked at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., serving as head athletic trainer and instructor in the exercise science/physical education department. Before that, he was an assistant athletic trainer at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science, a master's degree in athletic training, and is currently pursuing his doctorate degree with a dissertation emphasis on the effects of concussion education in high school athletes.
Professor Hyma is passionate about impacting students both in and out of the classroom. He involves students with the medical staff of the annual Chicago Marathon, encourages student participation at the regional athletic training level and organizes the “Run With Purpose” annual team running event. Each year, he serves with short term missions in the Dominican Republic in which many students have joined him in the past.
Brian Hyma resides in Bourbonnais with his wife Melissa, daughter Nora Kate, son Titus, and his black lab Coal. An avid outdoor enthusiast, he enjoys backpacking, running and biking.
