With 20 years as a public educator in Florida, Dr. Knowles prepares teachers for the classroom from his wealth of personal experience. He served for nine years as a teacher at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. His 11 years of experience as a school-based administrator include three years in high school and eight years in middle school.
A faculty member at Olivet since 1996, he teaches classes in early adolescent development, classroom management, methods of teaching elementary physical education, and school improvement leadership courses. His areas of specialty are the middle school concept and classroom management.
Dr. Knowles is a member of several professional organizations, including American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), National Middle School Association (NMSA) and AIMS Education Foundation.
He is married to Karen, an elementary teacher. His daughter, Erin, is a social worker in Chicago. His son, Ryan, is a graduate of Olivet and employed with a health care company in Florida. In his leisure time, Tom enjoys spending time with his family, bike riding and going to the beach.
