Connie Murphy

Professor Murphy is the director of the Learning Development Center. Throughout her career, she has had opportunities to incorporate both of her areas of expertise — English and journalism — as she has served as teacher, editor, writer, and now, professor.

Before beginning her tenure at Olivet, she taught English and journalism at West Junior High in Kansas City, Kan., and Highview Baptist School in Louisville, Ky. She later served as editor of “In Focus,” the corporate newspaper for Colorcraft Corporation, an international photofinishing company headquartered in Durham, N.C.

Since coming to Olivet in 1992, she has served in a variety of capacities, including adjunct professor of English and journalism, assistant director of public relations, and editor of “The Olivetian.” In 2000, she returned to full-time teaching.

Currently, she teaches courses in writing, essentials of learning, and success strategies. She also manages Olivet's online writing lab and the Learning Development Center lab. In 2011, she received the Richard M. Jones Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.

Professor Murphy is a member of Sigma Tau Delta and Kappa Delta Pi. Her hobbies include reading, cooking and photography.

She is married to Dr. Larry Murphy, professor of biblical literature at Olivet.
