Dr. Bruley joined Olivet’s full-time faculty in 2014 as the director of the MSN program for the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies and an associate professor of nursing in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
As an Olivet student, she studied zoology, psychology and nursing. She holds two bachelor’s degrees from Olivet. Her master’s degree studies at Governors State University focused on gerontology and nursing education. She received GSU’s Outstanding Graduate Student Award in 1997. In her doctoral studies at University of Illinois at Chicago, she focused on gerontology, palliative care and ethics. Her graduate education was supported with various scholarships, traineeship grants and pre-doctoral fellowships from the American Cancer Society and the National Institute for Nursing Research. In 2003, she received the Dissertation of the Year Award from the End of Life and Palliative Care Research Section of the Midwest Nursing Research Society.
With over 15 years in medical-surgical nursing in the hospital setting and over 10 years teaching nursing, Dr. Bruley brings a wealth of experience to her work with Olivet’s students, staff and faculty. Her educational studies and research have covered a wide variety of specialties, including nursing research, medical-surgical nursing, community health nursing, nursing theory and philosophy, and epidemiology.
She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and Sigma Theta Tau, the nursing honor society. During her career, she has chaired various nursing and university committees, including graduate admissions, MSN, writing across the curriculum and assessment.
Dr. Bruley and her husband, James, enjoy traveling to the East and West Coasts and visiting national parks, as well as taking long bike rides on various trails. They are the parents of two adult daughters and grandparents to five grandchildren, who bring great joy to their lives.
A Bible verse that is important to her in her life and career is Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
