Industry experience with AT&T and NASA, plus her part-time consulting work, makes Dr. Bareiss a valuable resource for Olivet’s students. Since 1987, she has taught a wide variety of courses and especially enjoys database technologies, administration and programming. She is also department chair and the sponsor of the computing club.
When her department received a grant of $200,000 from the National Science Foundation in 2010 to develop a course curriculum and lab instruction in computational science, she took an active leadership role. This is the first grant of its kind that Olivet has ever received.
In addition to her responsibilities of teaching and maintaining departmental servers, Dr. Bareiss is an active member of the Association for Computing (ACM) and Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSC). While serving on the national board for CCSC since 1996, she helped plan and lead the CCSC:MW regional conference. She has published several papers, and presented panel discussions and workshops at a number of regional, national and international conferences.
Her other professional activities include: grading computer science AP exams; reviewing NSF grants; and assessing other computer science programs. As an ABET computer science program evaluator, she reviews departments at other colleges and universities, and also assesses them for accreditation requirements.
For two summers, she was a faculty research fellow at the NASA Kennedy Space Center.
While on sabbatical leave during the 2000-2001 academic year, Dr. Bareiss was a database development consultant to AT&T.
During a one-year sabbatical in 2010-2011, she taught computing and English classes at Korean Nazarene University (KNU). She was the first faculty member that KNU hosted as part of the visiting scholar program.
Born in Hawaii as the youngest of four children, Dr. Bareiss grew up in Houghton, N.Y. Her father, a Navy chaplain, served as the chaplain at Houghton College.
When she wants to unplug from technology and find a quiet place, Dr. Bareiss goes SCUBA diving. Her first diving trip was to the Bahamas, and she has also dived in the Caribbean, Hawaii, Greece, Costa Rica and Honduras.
For her land adventures, she rides horses. Her thoroughbred, Billy, was her favorite jumper, and they spent many hours together before he retired. She is also the faculty sponsor for Olivet’s Equestrian Club.
