A professor for both undergraduate and graduate education courses at Olivet, Dr. Forgrave joined the faculty in 2007. She is the program coordinator of the MLIS (Master of Library Information Specialist) graduate program. She teaches the children's literature and curriculum integration courses in that program. In the undergraduate program, she teaches courses in children's literature and language arts/social studies methods.
Her doctoral dissertation was a study of the relationship of Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Award books on students’ reading motivation in three Illinois rural middle schools. She presented her findings at the Illinois School Library Media Association's (ISLMA) 2010 conference.
She and her children's literature students create teaching materials for the Monarch Children’s Choice books. These materials are posted on the ISLMA.org website for Illinois teachers. They are also developing reading and language arts materials for students at Shepherd Center, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Prior to teaching at Olivet, she was a school media specialist and librarian at the elementary education level, as well as a middle school language arts teacher and literary coach. Her experience spans 34 years in the public schools. She taught for 13 years in the Reddick School District (junior high school); and for 21 years in the Dwight Common School (16 years in middle school and five years as a school library media specialist.)
Her professional memberships include: Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA); American Library Association (ALA); American Association of School Librarians (AASL) (currently chairman of the AASL/CAEP committee); Two Rivers Reading Council (currently treasurer); Illinois Reading Council; International Reading Association; Kappa Delta Pi; and Phi Delta Lambda.
In her time away from the classroom and office, Dr. Forgrave is a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Kankakee. She also enjoys children's literature and encourages students to read by sponsoring book sales. She is also an avid reader and successful at bargain shopping.
She and her husband, Mark, have two adult children living in Brownsburg, Indiana — Jeff and his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Zachary and Aubrey; and Andrea and her husband, Nathaniel Draine, and their daughter, Maggie.
